One of the most common things I hear is some version of: "I don't know if it's bad enough yet to ask for help." I want to say this as clearly as I can: you do not need to hit rock bottom to reach out. If you're asking the question, that's already a good enough reason to have the conversation.
The right time to seek help is when substance use, yours or a loved one's, is causing worry, strain, or problems that keep showing up, even if things haven't fallen apart yet. Waiting for a crisis before reaching out means missing months or years where earlier support could have made the road shorter and easier. Early is always better than late, and any time is better than never.
If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, in crisis, or at risk of overdose or self-harm, please contact emergency services (911 in Canada) or a crisis line right away. That situation needs urgent, in-person support, not a blog post.
For non-emergency situations, Canada has several accessible starting points. ConnexOntario offers free, confidential support 24/7 for alcohol, drug, and mental health concerns, and can help you find local services no matter where you live in Ontario. CAMH provides crisis resources and information for anyone in Ontario navigating a mental health or substance use concern. CMHA, with over 330 community locations across Canada, supports people recovering from mental illness and addiction, often with local, in-person options.
Alongside these, a family doctor can be a straightforward first stop, especially for medical questions around withdrawal or safely reducing use. Publicly funded treatment programs and counselling are available in most communities, though wait times can vary. And recovery coaching, like what I offer through Colmer Recovery, is a good fit for the ongoing, practical, day-to-day support that happens between appointments, alongside treatment, or after it ends.
You don't have to figure out which of these is the "right" one before you start. Any conversation, with a friend, a doctor, a helpline, or a coach, is a legitimate first step, and it's normal to be pointed toward a few different resources before you find the right fit. A free, no-pressure Discovery Call with me is one option, but whichever door you knock on first, the important thing is that you knock.
