What Is a Recovery Coach? (And How It Differs from Rehab or Therapy)

If you've never heard of recovery coaching before, you're not alone. Most people are familiar with rehab, and many are familiar with therapy or counselling. Recovery coaching is a different kind of support, and it's one of the fastest-growing resources for people navigating substance use and the process of recovery.

A recovery coach is not a doctor, a therapist, or a treatment provider. A recovery coach is someone who has often walked a similar road themselves, and who works alongside you as a guide, an accountability partner, and a source of encouragement as you build the life you want.

Rehab is typically short-term, clinical, and focused on stabilization: getting through withdrawal safely, addressing an immediate crisis, and beginning treatment in a structured setting. Therapy is ongoing and focuses on the underlying emotional, psychological, and relational work that supports long-term healing. Both are valuable, and for many people, both are necessary.

Recovery coaching fills a different gap. It's the ongoing, practical, real-life support that happens between appointments and after treatment ends. A coach helps you set goals, build daily habits, navigate triggers, strengthen relationships, and stay accountable to the changes you're trying to make. Coaching can run alongside therapy or treatment, or it can be the primary support for someone who isn't ready for or doesn't need a clinical program.

One of the biggest differences is the relationship itself. A coach isn't diagnosing you or treating a condition. A coach is walking with you, one conversation and one decision at a time, the same way I once needed someone to walk with me.
